_What?
By the seashore where the bright blue waters are filled with fish, the sky with colorful stars, a full moon, a row of abstract figures stand as sentinels, together, before a row of spinnakers. A red/blue caliper, an A, marks each figure with spectral sets of tai-chi colors. Each firmly grasps the others hands in solidarity to forward the idea that unity embraces difference. There is no need to answer silly questions about the color of birds, sails, nor elephants! Looking East from Huntington Bay: Left, the Eaton’s Neck Lighthouse, American flag, Northport stacks, and to the right three bridges, the Robert Moses Lighthouse and Obelisk by the Atlantic Ocean. WHAT COLOR IS YOUR SPINNAKER? WHAT COLOR IS YOUR OSPREY? WHAT COLOR IS YOUR ELEPHANT? WHAT? _Me! I Live
Radiating from a flag marked with 420 jobs that are part of the vast community of Long Islanders. Opportunity for a good job and charming houses will promote a complex society, and Me! When, oh when, will Americans trust the deep truth that each person must have a decent home, a job, and opportunity for intellectual growth through out the life-span. Our taxes pay to keep the balance! An accurate map of our long island with a compass rose and a bright sun rising in the east completes this celebratory work. Note the tiny houses with a heart atop each door, and the string of thank you notes in various shades of tan in a grand large circle surrounding the central American flag. THANK YOU TO EACH PERSON WHO CONTRIBUTES TO THE QUALITY OF LIFE ON OUR ISLAND HOME. _Orange
Orange cries because it would be more comfortable being a circle rather than a square. Orange rehabilitates after the others realize that Orange must find its rightful place for them to be a complete family. Orange is right for the job! Orange is embraced as room is made between Magenta and Yellow. They all smile as they rejoice in their capacity to function in harmony. Once again, they are again one. Orange went missing until the others made room for Orange who was needed for them to be complete. Made this in memory of a student who jumped off a high building to his death. Q and A
It takes one good change in the history of humans in the natural selection process. An idea that benefits one is quick to take hold by the others and forever enjoyed. Memes, habits, actions, and ways of thinking are passed through a society for the benefit of the individuals like wild fire. These square mimics are not aware that they are merely emulating, and are happy with their new identities and shapes. Try the book on memes by Susan Blackmore. _Why Yellow Smiles
Yellow has gone missing leaving the rest of the spectrum without their yellow! Yellow rehabilitates and finds the rightful place and all ends with big smiles. This is the first design and the first movie made in the series as entries to the Embracing Our Differences open call. I really got into this theme. WHY YELLOW SMILES start from bottom right MAGENTA, BLUE, and PURPLE CRY • ORANGE and GREEN CRY • YELLOW CRIES • FINALLY, YELLOW STOPS AND SMILES. CHANGELING - an entity who was secretly exchanged for another from the start - changes. Why change now? “Because I didn’t know I could.” _Star Boat
Take a ride on a star boat with your friends to help focus your mind on your personal goals and how you might develop a plan for success. Included are the mighty Northport stacks by the sandy peninsula of Hobart’s Beach at high tide, sailboats, and a tiny sign that reads “Go No Further. Terns Nesting.” Twelve persons with different shirts, stars in hand, illustrate the idea of being together having a good time afloat on blue waters in open air thinking about the future. EFFECTIVE DEMOCRACY PROVIDES ALL PEOPLE WITH THE MEANS TO REALIZE THEIR GOALS |
_Same Stuff
The design is completed with large and tiny circles in many spectral colors illustrating an idea that all things are made of the same stuff and to be celebrated! The row of abstract people represent difference. Notice Eaton's Neck Lighthouse, Northport LIPA stacks, the stars that are also little circles, and the moon, companion, who looks on in a wordless judgment. Those tiny dots of the 'same stuff' repeated throughout the larger mural support the idea of diversity and similarity at the same time. Oh, that we can see the bubbling colors we share with one another in an ideal society. TAKE JOY IN THE NATURAL DIFFERENCE OF ALL THINGS THAT ARE MADE FROM THE SAME STUFF _The Great Cow Harbor Run
Come to Northport, NY to take the run or to cheer on your favorite runner, one of more than 5,000. However, running for your life in a race does not a winner make! True, with an eye on a personal goal and the calories burned— each runner may get there and may end up healthier. Looking North: Left, the Eaton’s Neck Lighthouse, American flag, and to the right the four Northport stacks, and sailing boats across Long island Sound. Check out the Webding font for who wins? on the red shirt. and the textures in each shirt. There’s a Cardinal, a Bluejay and some great leaves from a beautiful Japanese maple ubiquitous in Northport. WHO WINS ARE THOSE WHO LIVE IN A BEAUTIFUL LAND WHERE DIVERSITY SINGS AND OPPORTUNITY IS REAL. _Got It
A diverse group at swim in the waters off Huntington Bay at Hobart’s Beach and act out their great strategy to get the monster, a kind of Marco Polo game. With the air filled with expectations - with their clear-cut strategy the only one with the flippers, goggles, and snorkel ‘gets’ the dreaded monster covered with tiny green sea spiders. When that the monster is truly caught, what will happen next? Looking East from Huntington Bay: Left, a biplane flying with a banner GET THE MONSTER OF THE DEEP, an American flag, beach umbrellas and moving right the Northport stacks and a sign reading GO NO FURTHER... TERNS NESTING. LASSO PREJUDICE AND HATRED SO THAT OUR FREEDOM MAY THRIVE IN SAFETY AND PROMISE. _Striped Bass Running
Now, all in the same boat the students are at fishing school with their classmates under the watchful eye of their teacher — the captain of the ship! There is great excitement being on the water with the wind and splash as they catch, weigh, and throw back their precious fish. Note a similar fishing boat in the distance to reference. Black and white fish are placed through the scene, the water and sky. The use of stylized abstract figures is an exception here. FISH SCHOOL! OH, TO LEARN ABOUT FISH, FISHING, AND THE WATER AMONG CLASSMATES WHO ENJOY THE THRILL OF STRIPED BASS RUNNING. _Kites
In an ideal and windy island the beaches would be filled with many kite-flyers with who knows what colors. The men here express themselves in the color of their kites and shirts. Multiple and transparent kites show movement and joy, as the stacks spew acid smoke and the fish turn white. There is always more to do to improve. Note two seagulls that represent a happy pair. Note the smile and thrill on the face of that old person safe, and away in a boat flying her own kite! Note the kite with the cubist face of a child, and the symbol of a measure of person on the fisher lady’s kite. ON LONG ISLAND WE ENJOY THE WIND, SANDY BEACHES, AND OPEN WATERWAYS. WE ACT TO IMPROVE THESE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL. _Jackie Robinson
Where would diversity be today if it weren’t for the Jackie Robinson epoch with the breaking news that race was blessing, not a barrier, for sports? Some of us still feel abandoned when the Dodgers left for LA. What do my neighbors fear? All persons must be included in the mainstream of our American culture with all its benefits. I remember that fantastic day when all of Brooklyn cheered! To live in a house of personal choice is part of my definition of America. Realtors, take heed; We needNorthport! Description for Long Island Etudes
by American Folk artist Doris Rowe, aka Dojöro
Within these digital folk art posters there is minimal indication of 3-D space via light and shade, such as with the use of classic perspective with lines converging toward a horizon line and vanishing point. There are no cast shadows. Space is indicated with overlapping shapes, vertical placement and applied textures that also enhance the tactile energy. Each piece employs a naive style that is more closely related to craft - building in steps and layers than to marks pushed about on one layer as in painting, pastel, or drawing on paper.
This is life with light-hearted optimism; the world as we would like to view it ~ harmonious and at peace. Each work delivers a wistful idealized view of life on Long Island. Most include local identities: the four Northport stacks, Eaton’s Neck Lighthouse, Robert Moses Lighthouse and Obelisk. I am pleased with this body of work and present the two collections confident that the work is intense, complex, and unified. Tickled to use Webding font for house, golf flag, and emergency vehicle as pictorial elements.
Long Island Etudes are studies or technical exercises, completed in a visually intelligible composition that explores a particular technical problem, specific theme and stylistic approach resulting in an esthetically satisfying piece.
